This Christmas season I wanted to start a family tradition that would bring the focus of the season back to Jesus. The celebration of Advent was just the tradition I wanted to pass on to my children.
The word Advent means “coming” or “arrival”. It is celebrated the four weeks before Christmas with daily scripture reading, songs, lighting of candles and reconnecting to the real message of Christmas.
The Advent season is celebrated by thanking God for Jesus’ first Advent as a baby, but to also thank Him for His presence with us, through the precious Holy Spirit. It is so in anticipation and preparation for His final Advent.
1st Sunday~ Purple –The Candle of Hope or Prophecy– This candle reminds us of God’s promise to send a Savior.
2nd Sunday~ Purple – The Candle of Preparation – This candle is a reminder to be watchful and prepared for the coming of Jesus.
3rd Sunday~ Pink – The Candle of Joy – This candle reminds us of the joyous angels that announced the birth of Jesus Christ.
4th Sunday~Purple – The Candle of Love – This candle reminds us of God’s everlasting love for us. It was out of this great love that He sent us His Son.
White – The Christ Candle – This candle symbolizes Jesus Christ, the light of the world.
The Wreath symbolizes God Himself. His never-ending love and grace He has for us. The green for the newness of life we receive because of His gift to us, His son.
This celebration reconnects my family to the true meaning of Christmas, it brings us together to read scripture and prayer each day. I believe Advent can be celebrated all year by connecting to Christ and reading His word, it strengthens our belief in Him and His message.
